The Romantic Era

430 operas catalogued · listed by premiere year.

The Romantic era · roughly 1820 to 1900 · is the great century of opera. Verdi and Wagner reimagined the form on opposite ends of Europe; bel canto, French grand opera, Russian opera, and Italian verismo all flourished alongside one another. The works of this era account for the bulk of the standard repertory performed worldwide today, from Bellini and Donizetti through Meyerbeer, Gounod, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, and Puccini.
